The new browser recommended by Microsoft is here
Get speed, security, and privacy with the new Microsoft Edge .
Here are some solutions to common problems with Microsoft Edge. If you can't open Microsoft Edge, or if it opens briefly and then closes, or if you’re unable to navigate to specific webpages, select from the following to get going again.
If Microsoft Edge doesn't open
Restart your PC
Restart your PC and then reopen Microsoft Edge . Select the Start button, then select Power > Restart . If you have Windows updates pending, you'll see Update and restart.
Install the latest updates
Run Windows Update to help correct problems by replacing outdated files, updating drivers, and fixing vulnerabilities.
To check for updates, select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update , and then select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your PC is current, you have all the current updates.
Repair or reset Microsoft Edge
Repairing the browser won't affect anything, but resetting will remove your history, cookies, and any settings you might have changed. To find these options, select the Start button, then select Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Microsoft Edge > Advanced options.
If Microsoft Edge opens but stops working
Clear browsing history and cached data
Your browser automatically saves temporary Internet files to help pages load faster. Clearing this cache will sometimes fix page display problems.
If you can open Microsoft Edge, select History > Clear history. Select Browsing history and Cached data and files, and then select Clear.
Clear all browsing data
If you can open Microsoft Edge, select History > Clear history. Select all boxes, and then select Clear.
If the problem continues, look for answers and report issues in the Microsoft Edge forum. Select Settings and more > Help and feedback , and then select Send feedback. The Microsoft Edge team is always looking at feedback and working on issues.
I have been using Edge for a while but now it simply does not open. When I try to activate it, it seems to open with a blank page then closes. There are no error reports posted and I am returned to my Home screen. I don't seem able to delete it either so that I an re-install.

To delete cache as suggested, press the Xbox console power button for 10 seconds till fully shut down, unplug for 60 seconds (from wall socket and Xbox if it is an original One with power brick) plug back in and turn back on. Also have a check in 'my games & apps' to see if there is an update waiting.
please try a power cycle. here you can find a complete Manual:
Xbox One Microsoft Edge App Not Working

are you perhaps in the insider program that it could be a bug that has occurred through the program? if so, it would be great if you report the bug through the insider app.

Reset Microsoft Edge Xbox One
if the power cycle doesn't work, you could try a soft reset. You can find instructions here, but read them first before you start.

I don't seem able to delete anything associated with Edge. If I go to 'Manage App' I do not have anything in 'Saved Data'. There is no option to delete the App so that I could perhaps re-install.

Xbox One Microsoft Edge Problems
Try performing a hard reset EXACTLY like this.Hold the power button on the console for 8 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug the power cord back in and restart the console. I have found that leaving it unplugged is significantly more effective than leaving it for just a few seconds.
