Recently we had a look at Office 2013 and understood that it has been built with a whole new set of features. One such thing is insertion of images and videos into a Word document directly from the web. This means that a user does not have to leave the document to perform internet search for images, then, download the same and insert it into the document.
If you have got chance to try Word 2013 then you must have noticed the Online Pictures option under Insert tab. It allows you to search for images on Office.com, Bing Image Search, Skydrive and Flickr from the document interface. Of course, you must be online to do so.

One demerit here is that you will still have to navigate away from the document and search from images on a browser. But there is a definite advantage we are looking at. Let’s see what it is.
Step 1: Open a browser and search for the image that you want to insert into your document. Right-click on the image and Copy Image Location (or Image URL/link depending on the browser).
Step 2: Switch back to the document you are working on. Navigate to Insert tab and click on Picture as you do for other regular pictures.
Step 3: Insert Picture dialog opens for you to select a picture from your local collection. Here, instead of selecting an image, paste the URL that you copied in Step 1, against File name.
Click on Insert and allow MS Word to process the image from the internet. This takes little time depending on the size of the image.
That’s it. You just inserted a web image to your document without downloading it manually on your machine.
Another way to make this happen is to copy the image onto the clipboard instead of copying the location (as in Step 1) and then pasting the same to the document directly. However, in this scenario you will always need the image first. And with the detailed process you can simply make use of the URL if you have it handy.

This is one of those sweet tricks that’s super simple and ends up saving us a good bit of time in the long run. While I appreciate Microsoft’s attempt to integrate such a feature in its latest version of Office, I also understand that there are folks who might want to stick to the lower versions.
